He revealed the imminent launch of home delivery services for Nigerian passports, a significant development that will simplify the process of obtaining or renewing passports.

Improving Passport Delivery: Focus on Edo State

Recognizing the need to enhance passport delivery efficiency, the government has identified Edo State as a key area for improvement.

With a significant number of passport applications originating from Edo State, the government plans to establish additional Passport Front Office locations in the state.

This strategic move will expedite the passport issuance process, providing a streamlined experience for applicants.

The objective is to deliver passports within a reasonable timeframe, ensuring affordability and minimizing unnecessary complications.

However, it’s important to note that due to the high volume of applications, some delays may occur.

Anticipating Delays: Managing High Application Volume

Minister Aregbesola acknowledges the substantial influx of passport applications and the possibility of longer processing times.

For new applications, the estimated processing duration is approximately six weeks after completing biometric data registration, while renewals are expected to take around three weeks.

These timelines have been carefully designed to be competitive, reasonable, and aligned with international standards.

The government aims to strike a balance between efficient processing and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of passport issuance.

Noteworthy Surge in Passport Applications

In 2023, the Nigerian Immigration Service received an overwhelming 1.5 million passport applications, reflecting the increasing demand for passports among Nigerians.

Edo State, in particular, contributed 56,291 applications alone, ranking fifth among states with the highest application volumes.

In response to this surge, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Isah Jere Idris, has devised plans to establish more registration centers and implement front desk operations and offices.

These measures are aimed at reducing waiting times and improving the overall service efficiency.

Nigerian Passport on the Rise: Henley Passport Index

The Nigerian passport has witnessed a positive development in the recent 2022 Henley Passport Index. Climbing three places, it now stands at 100th out of 116 countries evaluated.

The Henley Passport Index is a globally recognized ranking system that assesses the number of destinations accessible to passport holders without requiring prior visas.

While the Nigerian passport’s ranking remains relatively low within Africa, this progress signifies a step in the right direction and highlights the efforts being made to improve its global recognition.

In Conclusion: Enhancing Passport Issuance and Delivery

The Nigerian government is committed to optimizing the passport issuance and delivery process for its citizens worldwide.

The introduction of home delivery services is a significant step towards providing convenience and accessibility.

However, it’s important to acknowledge that the surge in applications may result in longer waiting times.

The government appreciates the understanding and patience of applicants as they work towards minimizing any inconveniences caused by the high application volumes.
