House Of Reps Suspends Buhari’s 774,000 SPW (Special Public Works Programme)
The House of Representatives on Tuesday, 15th December, 2020 passed resolution for immediate suspension of the programme.
This is coming 2 days after the State Minister for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo announced that participants of the scheme will resume work on 5th January, 2021. The Minister said they have taken firm decision on starting the job on 5th January, 2021. He said he will make official statement after FEC meeting on Wednesday.

The lawmakers asked the Finance Ministry not to fund the job scheme. They also called on the President to recall the sacked DG of National Directorate of Employment, NDE, Mohammed Argungu.

Remember, the programme has experienced a lot of hiccups as a result of impasse between the Executive and the National Assembly, and between the State Minister for Labour and Employment and the DG of NDE on who is to supervise the programme, and the job slots sharing.

The 774,000 Special Public Works Scheme was designed to directly engage 774,000 jobless youths in public works like cleaning of drainage and gutters, sweeping of streets and markets etc in their localities for a period of 3 months where they will be paid N20,000 monthly stipends.
