What’s NIN & How Does it Work?

Before getting into how to check NIN number let’s know more about NIN. The National Identity Number is a set of 11 random digits assigned to a Nigerian citizen after successful enrollment.

To get your NIN, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) collects your demographic data, ten fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial images, and digital signature, and records them in their database.

But don’t worry, you won’t have to go all the way to NIMC’s head office every time you need to access your information. Once you’ve been assigned your NIN, an 11-digit code will be linked to your bio-data, and that’s it. No one else can claim it. You’re verified for life, even in death.

What’s the Purpose of NIN?

The NIN is used for anything that requires identity verification in Nigeria. You can use it for:

  • Obtaining your National e-ID card
  • Traveling (International passport application & acquisition)
  • Opening personal bank accounts
  • Getting your driver’s license
  • Obtaining your Permanent Voters’ Card
  • Participating in the National Health Insurance Scheme
  • Paying taxes
  • Transactions related to your contributory pension scheme
  • Accessing welfare and other relevant services from the Nigerian government
  • Transactions with social security implications
  • Land transactions subject to the Land Use Act

How to Get Your NIN?

If you’re 16 or older, visit any NIMC enrolment center near you and bring a supporting document with you. Your details will be cross-checked on the NIN verification portal to make sure you haven’t registered before.

If you haven’t, you’ll proceed with the registration. If you have, your old NIN will be retrieved for you. And the best part, all these processes are free (except for printing and lamination, which usually costs ₦100 or less).

Documents Needed to Register Your NIN

To register your NIN, all you need is your Bank Verification Number (BVN) and any of the following documents:
