Job Prospects in Canada for Nigerians

May 19, 2021 By Amitverain Leave a Comment

Canada is a study destination for international students from various countries, including Nigeria.

Apart from quality education, in Canada your opportunities to work are wide open. In Canada, the right to work is available to international students while studying and also after earning a higher education degree or diploma.

No wonder so many international students are currently studying in Canada while also working. International students will find the job market in Canada quite good. Some of the strongest industrial sectors in Canada are still very traditional, such as transportation , banking and tourism. However, in Canada there is also a sector that is the strongest when compared to other countries such as, petroleum, software engineering, animation, service industry and information technology.

Here are some explanations you should know about careers in Canada for international students.

During the study period

Since June 1, 2014, the Canadian government issued regulations that are favorable for international students seeking employment. The rule is that international students do not need to apply for a separate work visa if they wish to work outside of their studies, and they are released to work as soon as their study program starts.

A variety of job opportunities in all fields for international students are also widely available in Canada. Many educational institutions in Canada offer co-operative education programs. It is a structured educational program, where students can alternate between work and study periods. This integrated curriculum is achieved through partnerships between educational institutions and related industry providing employment.

All study permit holders can work part time both on campus and off campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week. You must also register for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and pay taxes. Interestingly, you can tell how much you pay for tuition and books each year. So later, once you start working after graduation, the Canadian government will know that you are still a fresh graduate and you will get a relief in paying taxes.

After graduate

International graduates from Canadian higher education institutions also have the opportunity to work in Canada for up to one year after receiving their degree or diploma. To work in Canada after graduation, you must apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP).

The length of time the work permit is valid depends on the duration of the study program you are taking. For example, for Bachelor graduates who need 4 years at university, the Canadian government will provide a work permit for 3 years. After you have worked for 12 months, if your job is in the managerial, professional, or technical category, you can register for permanent residency (PR) through the Canadian Experience Class. If you are a PhD student, there are specific pathways that you can apply to after completing your two years of study. So, it is possible that before graduation, you will have already obtained PR status from Canada. With this PR status, more jobs and scholarships are only open to Canadian citizens and PR holders.

Therefore, to get the opportunity to work in Canada, it would be great if it turned out that you had previously studied in Canada for several years, so that it would give you enough time to gain work experience and skills that could help you if you want to continue working in Canada after graduating from college. .

If you wish to live in Canada as a permanent resident after you have completed your studies there are several programs available, each with its own terms.
