About Natural gas processing plants
The sweetening of the gas is done in order to eliminate H2S and CO2 from natural gas . As it is known, H2S and CO2 are gases that can be present in natural gas and can in some cases, especially H2S, cause problems in the handling and processing of gas; for this reason, they must be eliminated in order to bring the content of these acid gases to the levels required by gas consumers. H2S and CO2 are known as acid gases, because in the presence of water they form acids, and a natural gas that possesses these pollutants is known as sour gas.
Among the problems that can be caused by the presence of H2S and CO2 in a gas can be mentioned:
- Toxicity of H2S.
- Corrosion due to the presence of H2S and CO2.
- In combustion SO2 can be formed which is also highly toxic and corrosive.
- Decrease in the calorific value of the gas.
- Promotion of hydrate formation.
- When the gas is going to be subjected to cryogenic processes it is necessary to eliminate the CO2 because otherwise it solidifies.
- The sulfur compounds (mercaptans (RSR), carbonyl sulphides (SCO) and carbon disulfide (CS2)) have rather unpleasant odors and tend to be concentrated in the liquids obtained in gas plants; these compounds must be removed before the compounds can be used.
